چکیده

Objective: There are various known hormone-related effects on audiometric thresholds and other auditory measures; however, research is scarce and mixed on the effect of pregnancy on the early-, mid-, and late-latency auditory evoked responses in a longitudinal fashion. Of clinical importance is to know whether electrophysiologic measures during pregnancy may further alter the results of, or mask, an already existing auditory disorder, which could complicate interpretation. Study design: We briefly review the literature on the effect of pregnancy on auditory evoked potentials. In addition, we take the non-medical, allied health perspective and describe electrophysiological data collected in a longitudinal manner throughout the course of two healthy pregnancies (non-otosclerotic and non-preeclamptic) and 1-month post-partum in one participant with normal hearing and in another with stable mild-to-moderately severe sensorineural hearing loss. Results: Earlyand late-latency responses had little to no change during pregnancy for both participants; however, middle-latency responses were quite varied for the participant with normal hearing. Conclusions: Auditory evoked potentials during pregnancy deserve further investigation, particularly in a longitudinal manner. Figure 1: Representative waveforms for auditory brainstem response (ABR), middle latency response (MLR), and late latency response (LLR) and their principle components.

Comparison of the extratympanic electrocochleography in human and rabbit

Electrocochleography (ECoG) records the electrophysiologic activity of the most peripheral part of the auditory system, the inner ear cochlea and the 8th nerve. Auditory evoked potentials being recorded are Cochlear Microphonic (CM) and Summating Potential (AP). In order to provide the proper background for laboratory research and introducing an ECoG curve of a model animal, it was decided to...

Electrophysiologic recordings in a patient with a discrete unilateral thalamic infarction.

The electroencephalogram, and somatosensory and auditory evoked potentials were recorded from a patient, who, at necropsy, showed a restricted unilateral thalmic infarct involving predominantly the anterior and lateral thalamus. The electroencephalogram showed distinct monomorphic delta activity and a suppression of the alpha rhythm over the side of the lesion. Short latency somatosensory evoke...

Mid-latency auditory evoked potentials during ketamine anaesthesia in humans.

We studied mid-latency auditory evoked potentials (MLAEP) during induction of general anaesthesia with ketamine 2 mg kg-1. MLAEP were recorded before, during and after induction of general anaesthesia on the vertex (positive) and mastoid (negative) positions. Latencies of the peak V, Na, Pa, Nb, P1 and amplitudes Na/Pa, Pa/Nb and Nb/P1 were measured. Fast-Fourier transformation was used to calc...

Auditory brainstem response, middle latency response, and late cortical evoked potentials in children with learning disabilities.

Auditory evoked potentials (AEPs) and behavioral tests were used to evaluate auditory processing in 10 children aged 7 to 11 years who were diagnosed as learning disabled (LD). AEPs included auditory brainstem responses (ABRs), middle latency responses (MLRs), and late cortical responses (P1, N1, P2, P3). Late cortical responses were recorded using an active listening oddball procedure. Auditor...
